Treadmill Stress Test

Technique:

Electrodes will be placed on the chest the same as for an electrocardiogram (EKG). The patient will be asked to walk on a treadmill. The speed and the incline of the treadmill will be gradually increased every 2 minutes. The doctor will look for changes in the EKG pattern and any symptoms that the patient may be experiencing. The test will be stopped if the patient becomes too tired, or has any symptoms such as chest pain.

Purpose:

To evaluate the patient for any of the following conditions:

  • Irregular heart rhythms.
  • If there is a decreased supply of blood and oxygen to the heart with exercise.
  • How hard the heart can work before symptoms develop.
  • How quickly the heart recovers after exercise.
  • The patients overall cardiovascular conditioning.
  • What the patients expected target heart rate should be during moderate-high level exercise.

Preparation:

No food to eat except water 4 hours prior to the test. It is import to speak with the doctor regarding:

  • How to adjust your insulin and food intake prior to the test if you are a diabetic.
  • If you should take your regular medications the morning of the test.
  • If you are on a beta block, should this particular medication be held 72 hours prior to the test.
  • Do not apply any lotions, oils, or powders to the chest area.
  • Wear comfortable clothing (shorts or pants with a shirt or blouse).

Involvement:

30-60 minutes.
