Transesophageal Echocardiogram


An IV line will be started so that a sedative may be given. The patient will be positioned on their left side so that a probe can be inserted through the mouth and into the esophagus.


To check for any congenital heart defects, heart valve disorders, or heart muscle disease, if an artificial heart valve is functioning properly, and if there are any blood clots within the heart.


Noting to eat or drink (except water) for 8 hours prior to the test.

  • It is important to discuss:
    • How to adjust insulin or food intake if the patient is diabetic.
    • If the patient should continue with their same dose of medication the morning of the test.


60-90 minutes
